Groomsmen's Gift Guide

Groom cover.jpg

The big day is almost here, and you and your fiancé would not have made it this far without the love and support of your friends and family. You’ve already picked out the perfect gifts to thank your bridesmaids months ago, but your hubby has probably yet to pick out gifts to show his--and your--appreciation for the time and money (i.e. bachelor party and tux rentals) his groomsmen put into your wedding day.

Whether you have one gift to give, or ten, personalization is essential; you want each man to know his individual support is important and acknowledged. We recommend engraving gifts with  a monogram specific to your groomsman or the wedding day date. Most companies offer free personalization with purchase of their items! Personalization is especially great for large wedding parties because you only have to find one item everyone will enjoy, and each will be distinct!

We’ve come up with an assortment of groomsmen gift ideas, in varying price ranges, to help inspire you to find the perfect gifts.

Whether you have many groomsmen, or are on a tight budget, there are an abundance of gifts under $25. Personalization is important with low-cost gifts; it makes them seem more elegant and expensive.

  • Socks

  • Flask

  • Pint glass

  • Shot glasses

  • Business card case

  • Bottle opener

The average groomsmen gift is between $35-$50. If this range appeals to you and your budget, check out these gift ideas (all engravable!).

  • Money clip

  • Pocket knife

  • Grillmaster set

  • Decanter

  • Zippo lighter

Those wishing to spend a little more should splurge on items that will get regular use and make your groomsmen feel dignified.

  • Shaving kit

  • Weekender bag

  • Custom leather luggage tags

If you have no budget, or just a best man, consider these luxurious gifts. Add a monogram to make the gift even more exclusive!

  • Cigar set (cutter & lighter)

  • Cigar box/Humidor

  • Professional poker set

  • Sports tickets

Some gifts are available at any price range. Our favorites are monogrammed cufflinks, tie clips, or watches. All can be worn on your wedding day and will get more than one use. Individualize cufflinks to match each groomsman’s personality, or match the leather band of the watch to the groomsmen belt and shoes!

DIY Brush Pad and Soap Cleaner

diy.png

Before we begin to embrace the colorful leaves falling, pumpkin spice everything, and curling up in your favorite sweater, we unfortunately have to let go of summer. A good way to start off the new season is with some clean brushes! This is our secret tip on how to clean your makeup brushes quick and without having to purchase expensive soap or a brush pad.

A DIY brush pad is so simple, all you need is a flat and plastic surface and some hot glue. You can use a clean lid to a container, a plastic plate, plastic cutting board, or even a plastic clip board! Once you have the item of your choice ready you can use the hot glue to create different patterns across the plate. We recommend doing some various sized dots, chevrons, straight lines, and a grid pattern. Once the glue is dry it's all good to use!

Now that you have your own DIY makeup brush pad, why not make some DIY brush soap too? All you need to do is pour two parts antibacterial dish soap with one part extra-virgin olive oil into a small glass/plastic dish. Next, you simply dampen your brush with lukewarm water, dip it into the soap, and swirl it around on the various patterns on your pad. Once the brush is clean you can gently rinse the excess soap out with lukewarm water and place the brushes slanted with the bristles down on a paper towel to dry. And voila! Your brushes are clean and ready for whatever makeup look you’re ready to tackle next!

  • 1 cup water

SIMPLE SYRUP

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Crumb Topping:

  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled

  • 2/3 cup AP flour

Glaze:

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar

  • 3 tbsp. heavy cream

  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F, and spray a 12-count muffin pan with nonstick spray.

  2. Make the crumb topping: In a medium bowl, combine both sugars, cinnamon, and melted butter, then slowly stir in the flour. The crumb topping will be thick and crumbly. Set aside.

  3. Make the muffins: In a stand mixer, with fixed paddle attachment, beat the butter on high speed until smooth and creamy (~1 min). Add both sugars and beat on high until creamed (~2 min), scraping the sides as needed. Add eggs, yogurt, and vanilla extract on medium-high speed until incorporated.

  4. In a large bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, allspice, and salt. With the mixer on low, slowly add flour mixture to the wet ingredients until no streaks remain. Add in the milk and mix until incorporated.

  5. Hand-fold peaches into batter with a rubber spatula.

  6. Fill the muffin pan with the batter to the top. Press a handful of crumble to cover the top of each muffin. Crumble some between your fingers for extra chunks of crunchy goodness!

  7. Bake for 5 minutes at 425°F, then reduce heat to 350°F for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool for 15 minutes on a wire rack while making the glaze.

  8. Making the glaze: Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl.

  9. Gently pop out muffins and place on a wire rack with paper towels below to catch extra glaze. Using a spoon or small pastry bag, drizzle glaze over warm muffins and enjoy!

  10. Make ahead tip: Muffins will stay moist and fresh in a sealed container on the counter for 3 day or in the refrigerator for up to 5. Muffins can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Just thaw in the refrigerator before eating!

Pro Tips

  • To easily peel slightly over-ripe peaches score the bottom of the peaches with an “X” and place in boiling water for 20-50 seconds until the skin begins to peel away from the score. Remove from water with a slotted spoon and place directly into an ice bath until cool enough to touch. The skin should peel right off! (If using under-ripe peaches a vegetable peeler works perfectly!)

  • You can use a plastic sandwich bag as a makeshift pastry bag! Just cut a very small hole in one corner and fill the bag with the glaze. It makes for a more precise drizzle than a spoon.

Ring Styles

The world of engagement rings can be a very overwhelming and stressful place! Luckily, we’re here to help you navigate the in’s and out’s of rings -- including diamond shape, settings, and band materials, to help you pick that perfect ring!

You would be surprised at just how many different cuts there are for diamonds! The list goes on and on. However, the top 10 cuts are: round, princess, oval, marquise, pear, cushion, emerald, asscher, radiant, and heart. While each diamond is unique, each of these cuts carries the same characteristics.

This tends to be the most popular style, with 75% of all diamonds being cut round. Due to demand, this tends to be the most expensive cut. That being said, its brilliant cut leaves it with 58 facets, making it beautifully bright and reflective. This shape is very versatile in terms of what settings it will work well with. In love with the round but it’s slightly out of your budget? Try going to with a smaller stone and adding a halo, which is even smaller stones surrounding the center round cut stone.

The princess cut tends to be the most popular of the “fancy” shapes. A great bonus is that they tend to be slightly cheaper than the round cut, as they’re square and create less waste. This square or slightly rectangular cut also give the illusion of a larger stone than a same weight round diamond. This cut is also very versatile in what settings it works with! One thing to note about setting a princess diamond: due to its rectangular nature, it is extremely important that it is placed in a four-prong setting where each corner of the stone is protected from chipping or other damage.

An oval shape is similar to the round in that it is a modified brilliant cut, meaning it is gorgeously bright and reflective. An oval diamond is perfect for someone who likes the round cut, but wants something a little different and more unique. This cut also gives off the illusion of a larger diamond in addition to making one’s fingers to longer and more slender.

This football shaped diamond also falls in the modified brilliant cut group. Similar to the oval cut but with pointed ends, the marquise diamond also offers the benefit of making the fingers look longer and more slender. It boasts the largest crown of all cuts, therefore giving the best illusion for a larger diamond. It’s important to note that this cut must be set in a two-prong setting to protect the ends from chipping.

The pear shape is a combination of a round and marquise. It is rounded at one end and tapers to a point at the other. This has the same benefits of the marquise shape but adding a little variety. The point is always worn facing the hand on the wearer. This must be set so that a prong protects the point, as this is where the diamond would be likely to chip.

The cushion cut is a square cut with rounded edges, resembling a pillow or cushion. This cut used to be the most popular before the round style took its place at the top of the list. However, recently the cushion shape has been making a surging comeback and is becoming extremely popular.

This long rectangular diamond achieves its shape with “step cuts” originally created to cut emeralds, hence its name. This elegant shape differs from the brilliant cut of many of the other shapes and offers more of a “hall of mirrors” effect and more sophisticated feel.

The asscher cut reached its popularity in the 1920’s, becoming a rare find only in antique shops over the years. However, it has recently made a comeback and is gaining popularity. This diamond has a similar cut to that of the emerald shape, but instead of being rectangular, it is a square shape.

The radiant cut diamond is a combination of a princess and cushion cuts with its square to rectangular shape and its rounded corners. Its brilliant cut will shine bright in a variety of settings.

A clear image of love, the heart shape diamond is exactly as it sounds. This diamond is also a modified brilliant cut and will light up any room. Be aware, as smaller heart diamonds (under a half carat) are less ideal and can be difficult to really see the shape, especially after being put in a proper setting.

Picking a setting can be a daunting task. The sheer number of options is enough to make anyone’s head spin. The setting is an important decision as it may dictate which cut of diamond you will need to pick. Here are some of the most popular and common settings.

The prong setting is the most common and classic setting. Essentially, the diamond sits in a type of claw that holds it in place. The claw usually has either four or six prongs to secure the diamond. With four prongs, you can see more of the diamond, but with six, your diamond is less likely to shift or fall out of the setting. Overall, there is still a minimal amount of metal visible with either style, centering all attention on the stone!

This setting is the second most popular setting and holds a more modern feel. Instead of prongs, this setting offers a thin metal surround for the entirety of the diamond, offering it even greater protection. Additionally, a bezel setting is less likely to snag on anything like clothing, which may occur with a prong setting.

A pavé setting is one that is “paved” with tiny diamonds all around the band. The stones are placed with minimal metal between them, giving the band a constant sparkle any way you look at it. This setting highlights the main stone. Be cautious when picking a pavé setting and ensure that you have the proper ring size selected, and it’s both difficult and pricey to resize.

In a halo setting, the main stone is encircled in smaller stones. Often selected in an attempt to save some money, this setting gives the illusion of a much larger center stone. Many times, people will combine the halo setting with a pavé setting to really get a sparkle.

While there are other options out there, the most common materials for engagement and wedding bands are Gold and Platinum. Each has its pros and cons, which we’ll outline below!

When you think gold, usually you think of yellow gold… but that’s not all we’re referring to here! Included in the gold family is yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. A classic, versatile option, gold itself is actually too soft on its own to be a band, and is therefore combined with other materials to strengthen it. The most common options you’ll find are 18K (75% gold), 14K (58% gold) and 10K (about 42% gold) gold. Yellow gold has dropped in popularity, with both white gold and now rose gold rising to the top of the charts. Durable and readily available, gold is a classy and budget friendly option for your band.

Unlike white gold, platinum is naturally a white metal. It is also a very durable and more rare option than gold. This is a great option for those who are extremely active. Additionally, platinum is hypoallergenic, so it’s a great option if someone has a metal allergy!

Picking an engagement ring is a huge decision. The key is to take your time doing your research so you can confidently make your decision! For more information on diamonds, check out our post on the 4 C’s

Honeymoon Hotspot: Boulder, CO

The breathtaking natural beauty of Boulder, Colorado will attract the couple who cannot deny their fierce passion for adventure, despite their hopeless romantic tendencies. Both close to home and a refreshing change of pace, Boulder offers a much needed escape from reality after the anxiety of wedding planning has finally passed. In addition, for couples who wed in the summer, Boulder’s high altitudes promise cooler temperatures than other typical honeymoon destinations. This allows more opportunity for outdoor activities and exploration, and a chance to grow as a newly married couple while reveling in nature's bounty in its purest form.
Relaxation is promised by the many local B&Bs, especially The Bradley Boulder Inn--a TripAdvisor favorite, with reviews praising everything from the complimentary beverages to the delicious breakfasts. Located only a short walk from many local restaurants and shops--giving you a chance to explore some of the local nightlife after exploring during the day--The Bradley Boulder Inn is both convenient and comfortable--and utterly romantic in its simple, rustic elegance. The establishment offers everything from complimentary wine and cheese tastings to ideal downtown location for the ultimate leisurely getaway!
However, despite the temptations of the Inn, the real adventure lies beyond the homey comforts of your room. A brief car ride away awaits Chautauqua Park--one of Boulder, Colorado’s many attractions. Though the vast expanse of the mountains gives the impression of untouched wilderness, the park offers marked hikes and picnic areas for an experience you both will remember for a lifetime. You will not lack for scenery, as the many varieties of foliage and varying terrain will keep you out hiking and chasing that feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment which the end will bring for hours. One highly recommended hike is on Mesa Trail--a gorgeous intermediate level hike with well marked paths. We suggest bringing along a bag packed full of your favorite cheese, crackers and wine for an intimate moment together, and a chance to avoid the more touristy, crowded areas of the city. While the park offers a destination for your itinerary, Boulder is rich with other natural beauty to discover--particularly the Flatirons. Ancient reddish sandstone formations along Boulder’s foothills, the Flatirons are stunning to look at, and a rewarding struggle to trek along--or climb, for the adventurous spirit up for the challenge! The unknown and unexplored lies in the comfort of your backyard!
If an outdoor picnic does not live up to your ideas of romance, look no further than Blackbelly restaurant--a taste of local farm-fresh flavors in an upscale setting. Given the chef’s title of “Top Chef” champ, any hesitations can be thrown right out the window. Among their many delicious dinner options are the highly recommended fresh cuts of steak from their butchershop. However, their menu extends far beyond beef, with everything from crispy pig ears to delicious seafood. They also boast an extensive wine, beer and cider list--the cherry on top to any perfect dinner.
Though the list of activities and sightseeing are endless for your honeymoon, we still like to emphasize the importance of the little things during these trips. For her, Boulder Blooms florist shop offers a wonderful opportunity for a thoughtful surprise. A soft and delicate bouquet also serves as a reminder that, despite the chaos of daily life, you’ll always find moments to remind her how deeply you care. For him (and you!) we suggest a couple’s massage at nearby Elements Massage as a way to further encourage the escape from reality and time for indulgent relaxation which your honeymoon offers.

Step 1: Heat your butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat.

Step 2: Once the butter has melted, add in garlic and red pepper flakes. Stir the mix until it’s fragrant and the garlic becomes a light golden color (this should take around 2 minutes).

Step 3: Next pour in the wine and lemon zest and cook until the alcohol smell is gone and the sauce turns to a nice golden color (around 4 to 5 minutes).

Step 4: Add in the shrimp, ½ teaspoon of salt and a few grinds of pepper. Stir frequently for about 3 minutes or until the shrimp start to turn pink on the outside, but are still translucent on the inside.

Step 5: Stir in zoodles until they are coated with the sauce and begin to wilt slightly. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Step 6: Transfer into a serving bowl and drizzle with remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil and sprinkle with parsley.

Step 7: Serve and enjoy!

Note: Recipe takes about 30 minutes and serves 4.  The fastest and easiest way to make zoodles is to use a vegetable spiralizer. Although some can be pricey, there are many more affordable options available on sites like amazon and trust us, you won’t regret buying one!
